Rehabilitation Services Program


Specializations


Many Rehabilitation Services majors continue to choose the option of specializing in Addiction Rehabilitation, Career Services, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, or Therapeutic Recreation. With an interest in working with particular populations and/or problem areas, these specializations provide a framework for pertinent coursework to help the student develop relevant knowledge and skills. The specializations also may aid the student in the attainment of a specific proven credential, such as state licensure, and state or national certification. Each specialization requires 16 credits in specialized coursework in addition to a relevant field experience working is the specific area. The following are the four specializations, available to all majors in the rehabilitation services program:

Addiction Rehabilitation

Addiction Rehabilitation is for students interested in working with people who have addictive and abusive behaviors.  These behaviors could include alcohol and other drug addiction, eating disorders, gambling, Internet addiction, spousal abuse and family violence.
 


Career Services

This specialization is for those who are interested in working with people who are entering or returning to the workforce. Vocational assessment, planning, education, counseling and adjustment, supported employment and placement in the workforce are some of the aspects of this specialization.
 


Psychosocial Rehabilitation

The primary focus of Psychosocial Rehab is to educate students about the realities and limitations that individuals with psychiatric disabilities face in every day life. Field experience for this specialization could include inpatient facilities providing services to acute psychiatric patients, as well as outpatient programs providing comprehensive services to individuals living in the community.
 


Therapeutic Recreation Specialization

This specialization focuses on incorporating recreational activities into the lives of individuals with varying abilities.  Students involved are given an in depth analysis of modifications and adaptations of environment and/or equipment, therefore allowing all individuals to lead healthy and productive lives.
