Specializations
Many Rehabilitation Services majors continue to choose the option of specializing in Addiction Rehabilitation, Career Services, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, or Therapeutic Recreation. With an interest in working with particular populations and/or problem areas, these specializations provide a framework for pertinent coursework to help the student develop relevant knowledge and skills. The specializations also may aid the student in the attainment of a specific proven credential, such as state licensure, and state or national certification. Each specialization requires 16 credits in specialized coursework in addition to a relevant field experience working is the specific area. The following are the four specializations, available to all majors in the rehabilitation services program:
Specialization List and Application (pdf)

Addiction Rehabilitation
Addiction
Rehabilitation is for students interested in working with people
who have addictive and abusive behaviors. These behaviors could
include alcohol and other drug addiction, eating disorders,
gambling, Internet addiction, spousal abuse and family violence. |
Career Services
This specialization is for those who are interested in working with
people who are entering or returning to the workforce. Vocational
assessment, planning, education, counseling and adjustment, supported
employment and placement in the workforce are some of the aspects of this
specialization. |
Psychosocial Rehabilitation
The primary focus of Psychosocial Rehab is to educate students
about the realities and limitations that individuals with
psychiatric disabilities face in every day life. Field experience for
this specialization could include inpatient facilities
providing services to acute psychiatric patients, as well as
outpatient programs providing comprehensive services to individuals
living in the community. |
|
Therapeutic Recreation Specialization This
specialization focuses on incorporating recreational activities
into the lives of individuals with varying abilities. Students
involved are given an in depth analysis of modifications and
adaptations of environment and/or equipment, therefore allowing all
individuals to lead healthy and productive lives. |
