Rehabilitation Services Program

Mentorship Program

The Rehabilitation Services Program developed a program focusing on assisting new or transfer students with questions or concerns about the Rehabilitation Services Program.  Mentors are upperclassmen Rehabilitation Service Majors and are selected based on grade point average (GPA), knowledge of the major, and personality.  All mentors complete a training course on the duties of mentorship as well as receive a manual to aid in the mentorship process.  Any student can talk to his or her advisor and request to be paired with a mentor at the beginning of the Fall or Spring semester.

Why Get a Mentor?

College can be overwhelming!  Mentors are also students and can relate to the stresses that college may bring.  They are knowledgeable about courses in the Rehabilitation Services Program as well as courses not in the major.  They have greater understanding of scheduling, they know who to talk to about courses, and can help advise new students on the steps to take when something needs to be accomplished.  Mentors have been around the block; having a mentor means getting advice from an experienced student who can help new or transfer students adjust and assimilate to college life.

Roles of Mentoring

Mentors are available to act as a liaison between professors, offices, and people.  New or transfer students may not know how to approach certain people or even who to approach with questions or concerns.  Mentors are available to teach the student where to go and who to contact.

Meetings between a mentor and a mentee can occur in the environment that works best, whether through emails, meeting one-on-one, or through a group setting.  Some mentors only meet with his or her mentee once or twice, while other mentors meet with mentees on a weekly basis.  Mentors are generally very flexible, and they will work around their schedules to meet a student's needs.
